6 Changes To WWE SmackDown Ahead Of WrestleMania 42

With a shifting landscape on WWE SmackDown on the Road to WrestleMania 42, it seems that some big things could be coming soon.

From changes in demeanor to brand new tag teams coming together, there could be some intriguing changes ahead.

Here are six potential changes coming to WWE SmackDown ahead of WrestleMania 42.

6. Sami Zayn heel run

With Sami Zayn going around backstage at the March 6 edition of SmackDown seemingly attempting an apology tour for recent erratic behavior, his attempts to make amends were met with an icy response from Cody Rhodes.

While the duo would go on to have a tense exchange again, there was certainly subtext to suggest that Sami wasn’t through with Cody just yet.

Poised to go rogue in his desire to join the fray for a World Championship opportunity in the future, it seems as though Sami Zayn is set to kick off a massive heel run.

As Aleister Black loomed, Zayn heard a message from Randy Orton encouraging him to not only be selfish but to perhaps listen to the voices in his head.

5. Different creative direction

WWE SmackDown co-lead writer Road Dogg

On March 6 there was some intriguing backstage news revealed regarding a backstage departure.

With Dave Meltzer reporting in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Brian James who was recently serving as SmackDown co-head writer has departed the company.

Referencing a recent performance review as a potential catalyst for the change, more details are likely to be revealed in due time.

However there could certainly be a shift in the creative direction of SmackDown with a new dynamic of leaders set to be at the helm.

4. Continued rise of Trick Williams

With Trick Williams continuing as a clear fan favorite on WWE SmackDown, it seems that he and his Lemon Pepper Steppers are there to stay.

Potentially tangling with the likes of Aleister Black or Damian Priest on the Road to WrestleMania 42, it could be that Williams is set for an even bigger push soon.

Possibly set to challenge Jacob Fatu, Drew McIntyre or even Cody Rhodes at the big event, there could be another route for Williams to take as well — if his most recent appearance on SmackDown is any indication.

Interrupting Randy Orton on the March 6 edition of the show, he would end up on the receiving end of an RKO after making an impressive entrance — now including a rotating platform.

3. New Tag Teams in title hunt

The next challengers for the current WWE Tag Team Champions The MFTs were determined on the March 6 edition of SmackDown through a tag team turmoil match.

In the end, it was R-Truth and Damian Priest who ended up winning the bout to become the new number one contenders for the MFTs titles.

Elsewhere, Kiana James and Giulia made their intentions clear when they interrupted the Irresistible Forces (Nia Jax & Lash Legend) and their championship celebration who were already having their party crashed by Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss.

Despite Giulia already holding the WWE Women’s United States Championship, the duo could become a dangerous force in pursuit of the tag team titles.

2. Switch-up for United States Championship plans

WWE's Chelsea Green in a wheelchair

With Jordynne Grace being noted as potentially picking up an injury during a Main Event match filmed ahead of the March 6 SmackDown taping, there could be a swerve.

Slightly confirming that she was at least planning to be off her feet for the rest of the show, Jordynne Grace would post a photo of herself seated in Chelsea Green’s wheelchair backstage at SmackDown.

While Grace seemingly was in the hunt for a major opportunity on the Road to WrestleMania 42, her potential departure could come at the right moment for another star to return.

Possibly subbing back in Chelsea Green or even looking toward a call-up from WWE NXT like Sol Ruca, there could be a big shift in the creative plans ahead.

1. New Main Event Feud

While Randy Orton won the Elimination Chamber bout to secure his spot in the main event at WrestleMania 42, turns out his opponent wasn’t quite so obvious.

First set to take on Drew McIntyre at the big event in Las Vegas, there would end up being a swerve already for SmackDown on the Road to WrestleMania.

By the end of SmackDown on March 6, the main event side from the blue brand will be clear with Drew McIntyre defending his Undisputed WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes in a bout that was made by GM Nick Aldis.

With the show kicking off with Randy Orton noting that either opponent would be fine with him, albeit with very different feelings towards both, he remained committed to capturing his 15th World Championship at WrestleMania 42.
