A WWE star has praised Triple H for his role in the growth of women’s wrestling within the company to where it is today.
It’s no secret that today’s landscape of women’s wrestling in WWE is very different from what things were like in the past, as the last 10 years have seen the growth to the women being utilized on an equal footing to the men a lot more often.
In a new interview on Q with Tom Power, Natalya, who has been with WWE since 2007 and has seen that entire change firsthand, credited Triple H pushing the women in NXT as the catalyst for the growth of the women’s division in WWE overall.
She explained:
“I really believe the time that it started to change was when Triple H took over NXT and he started putting women more at the forefront.
“He started introducing more women’s matches and giving the women time, and giving them really strong storylines. So then we started to see it take shape at NXT with women like Paige and Emma and Sasha Banks.
“He asked me if I would do a match against Ric Flair’s daughter Charlotte Flair – she was brand new to the company, she had a lot of raw potential, they really wanted to try to see what they could bring out in her.
“Hunter knew that I could lead and be somebody that she could have potentially a great match with. But of course they weren’t sure, because it was like her first year or two in the company. Brand new, she started from scratch.
“Long story short, he gave me that opportunity in 2014, we had a match that is ranked in women’s wrestling matches, it’s just one of those must-see matches that still stands strong today, and it really started to change the way that people looked at women’s wrestling in WWE.
“But it also showed the world that Nattie could lead and be special, and this girl named Charlotte Flair was a remarkable talent. It was something that catapulted women’s wrestling, me and her.
“I really think that people started to take notice of women’s wrestling at NXT. But people started getting loud about it on social media, and that’s kind of the beautiful thing sometimes about social media, is that people have a platform and they have a voice. So they were able to say, ‘Hey, we want more.’
“They were seeing the women on Raw get two-minute matches, and then they were seeing the women at NXT getting these really long, beautiful matches with stories, and people started getting vocal about it.”
