Former WWE Women’s World Champion IYO SKY has explained the origins of her current ring name, which she debuted at SummerSlam 2022.
IYO SKY made her main roster debut at the July 30, 2022 WWE premium live event, aligning with Bayley and Dakota Kai to form Damage CTRL.
This marked her first appearance as IYO SKY, with SKY previously wrestling as Io Shirai in WWE and Japan.
Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, SKY recalled Triple H telling her about her main roster debut plans, noting:
“So that’s interesting because I was Io Shirai even in NXT. I thought when I joined WWE, I would get something new for a ring name, but WWE didn’t ask me and I kept using Io Shirai.
“Then I got called up to the main roster, SummerSlam 2022… Hunter called me, ‘are you ready to go to Raw?’ I totally didn’t expect that.
“He told me, with Bayley and Dakota Kai, she was not even working on WWE. That made me so happy, because Bayley, Dakota and me making a new unit, oh my gosh!”

Explaining how she landed on her current ring name, SKY continued:
“Then he says ‘oh, please think of something new for your ring name.’ Oh my gosh, I didn’t have any time, because that was maybe only five days before SummerSlam. Less than one week, for sure.
“So Io Shirai, the Shirai means ‘purple thunder’ in Japanese, that’s why I tried to think of something when hearing my name, you can imagine something like a fire or water, whatever.
“If you hear (IYO SKY), you can easily think of the sky, and you won’t forget my name, so that’s why I decided to go with SKY.
