On March 30, John Cena took to social media to announce that he will return to WWE at WrestleMania 42.
After this announcement, Cena could play any number of roles at “The Showcase of the Immortals.”
Whether it be confronting old rivals or just playing more of a non-wrestling role, Cena will add plenty of star power to the Mania two-night event in Las Vegas.
Here are five potential John Cena WWE WrestleMania 42 return plans.
5. Host of WrestleMania 42

During his announcement, John Cena announced that WrestleMania 42 needs a host and that he will fill that role for the show.
In the past, the host of WrestleMania has kicked off the event and had interactions with certain stars during the two-night show.
Cena kicking off Mania and appearing for the first time since his retirement at the end of 2025 will offer some notable moments to the weekend.
From interacting with celebrities to having in-ring segments, there are a number of different things Cena could do at “The Grandest Stage of Them All.”
4. Brings Travis Scott Out For A Performance

John Cena was heavily involved in many different noteworthy moments during his retirement tour.
Cena’s heel turn at WWE Elimination Chamber 2025 had to be one of the biggest moments of the entire year and featured not only The Rock, but also Grammy Award winner Travis Scott.
Showcasing their friendship, Scott also appeared at WrestleMania 41 and helped Cena in his match against Cody Rhodes.
Opening the door for the rapper to make a return to WWE for the first time since last year, Cena could bring a surprise musical performance from Travis Scott at this year’s Mania back in Las Vegas.
3. Revealed As Randy Orton’s Mystery Supporter

On the March 13 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, Randy Orton shocked the world by turning heel on Cody Rhodes in a brutal and bloody beatdown.
Since then, Orton has been seen on the phone with a mystery supporter, who he has said helped him realize who he really is as a “killer.”
This mystery supporter has helped “The Viper” tap into the voices in his head to do bad things to the likes of Rhodes and Matt Cardona in recent weeks.
If John Cena is the mystery supporter, it can bring the two career long rivals together as Orton goes for number 15 against their mutual rival, Rhodes at Mania.
2. Special Guest Referee For Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton Undisputed WWE Championship Match

While John Cena indicated that he plans to be the host of WrestleMania 42, he could also play the role of special guest referee for a major match at “The Show of Shows.”
Considering his rivalries with both men in 2025, it would make the most sense for Cena to play a role in the Randy Orton vs. Cody Rhodes Undisputed WWE Championship Match.
Adding Cena’s star power to this feud would automatically make it more interesting for fans to see and make them want to find out who he will favor.
Cena calling it right down the middle would give Orton vs. Rhodes a referee who will garner some respect and make sure the better man wins.
1. GUNTHER Interrupts & Mocks Cena

At the December 13 edition of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, GUNTHER defeated John Cena in his final match.
Not only did “The Ring General” beat Cena, he also made “The Never Seen 17” tap out for the first time in 20 years.
With Cena being announced as the host of WrestleMania 42, GUNTHER could come out to interrupt him during his opening for “The Showcase of the Immortals.”
GUNTHER mocking Cena to his face could be presented as a substantial segment that sees another star come out to make the save and fight off “The Ring General” at Mania.
