The Rock has made the major announcement that he will be returning for the February 21 episode of WWE SmackDown.
The announcement caught fans off guard as it seemed like we wouldn’t be seeing Rock again on the road to WrestleMania 41.
Here are five potential reasons for The Rock’s surprise return.
5. Canceled WWE Bloodline & Cody Rhodes Match

Shortly before The Rock made the announcement of his return, WWE announced a new match for SmackDown.
That match was set to be a Bloodline reunion of Jacob Fatu, Tama Tonga and the recently returned Solo Sikoa taking on Cody Rhodes, Damian Priest and Braun Strowman in a six-man tag.
However, that announcement was soon deleted by WWE, and not long after, The Rock’s return was confirmed.
It’s possible that Rock returning may have changed whatever plans were initially in place for this match – whether that be because he’s going to interact with Cody Rhodes, or maybe even with The Bloodline.

4. To Promote His Next Movie Project

Hours before The Rock’s WWE SmackDown return announcement, he was in the news for a different reason.
It had emerged via Deadline earlier in the day that Rock is set to star as a “ruthless” Hawaiian crime boss in a crime drama directed by Martin Scorsese.
Perhaps he’s just going to show up at SmackDown, laugh in all of our faces that his movies are more important than us, and leave.
He said he’s returning as the ‘Final Boss’ and that would be quite a heelish thing to do, to be fair.

3. Ava’s WWE Main Roster Push

Reports emerged online recently that NXT General Manager Ava was set for something of a “push” in WWE soon.
If you weren’t aware, Ava is the real-life daughter of The Rock.
There’s a chance that if those reports are accurate, Rock could be stepping in to help propel whatever the plans are for Ava heading into WrestleMania.
She does seem to have her hands full running NXT at the moment – you know, with it being the most chaotic show in all of television.

2. Winning The WWE Elimination Chamber To Face Cody Rhodes At WrestleMania

The WWE Elimination Chamber PLE is coming up on March 1, and is built around being the last chance for people to earn their way into a championship match at WrestleMania 41.
The winner of the men’s Elimination Chamber this year will challenge Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship, with the lineup set as John Cena, CM Punk, Damian Priest, Drew McIntyre, Logan Paul and Seth Rollins.
As of last year’s WrestleMania, the plan was for Rock vs Rhodes this year, and while it might have seemed like things had gone off course, perhaps Rock has decided he’s able to do it.
As the ‘director of the board’, maybe he’ll pull a John Cena and just tell everyone he’s entering the Chamber, go on to win it, and set up the match with Cody.

1. Confronting Triple H About His Booking

All has not been unicorns and rainbows for WWE CCO Triple H recently, as he’s come under some heavy criticism on his booking of the road to WrestleMania thus far.
Fans have become increasingly vocal on social media about some of the decisions being made and the matches that we’re seemingly heading towards at Mania.
Maybe The Rock can use his board of directors status to confront Triple H and tell him to get his act together – potentially even kicking off something of a feud.
If we can’t actually do Rock vs Triple H, perhaps each of them could just pick someone on the roster to represent them in a Mania match.
