With John Cena preparing to bid his final farewell to WWE in December 2025, discussion has turned to who he will face as his final opponent.

While there are already rumors pointing in one specific direction, there could be other intriguing prospects as well.

Here are six potential stars to face off against John Cena in his final WWE match.

6. GUNTHER

WWE's GUNTHER

Already rumored to be the final opponent for John Cena —GUNTHER is currently out of action.

As reported on WWE Raw, GUNTHER was said to have sustained a “septal hematoma and orbital blowout fracture” as a result of the “injury” from the announce table spot and would be out of action “indefinitely”.

Despite the development, there are still several months to go until Cena’s last match set for December to bring the storyline together.

With the potential to be the ultimate showdown between the dastardly Ring General and the vintage babyface John Cena, GUNTHER seems like the most logical choice.

5. Dominik Mysterio

Whether fans actually despise him or just love to hate him, Dominik Mysterio continues to receive wild crowd receptions worldwide.

One huge way to capitalize on his popularity would be to have him go up against John Cena during this final leg of the WWE farewell tour.

Since Mysterio is undeniably already a big star — he is seemingly poised to continue his career for decades to come.

Being the perfect heelish foe for John Cena, Dominik Mysterio could be the ideal final opponent as Cena looks to put over a younger star on his way out of the company.

4. Austin Theory

After teasing a break-up for a very long time – there ended up not being a particularly eventful blowup between the A-Town Down Under tag team partners of Grayson Waller and Austin Theory.

Instead, Waller would share in a backstage segment that their tag team was officially over and that Austin Theory was injured.

According to a new report from PWInsider, Austin Theory has been removed from the WWE internal active roster list which denotes that they are not able to be booked on TV.

While the nature of Theory’s injury and thereby his timeframe for return remains unknown – fans can hold out hope that his character can have one more interaction with John Cena before the latter departs in December.

3. Myles Borne

A standout from NXT, Myles Borne could be an intriguing choice to be John Cena’s final opponent.

Already displaying a promising in-ring future, Borne also comes complete with an emotionally compelling backstory.

If there were to be a tournament on NXT, the partnership with TNA Wrestling could see even more contenders with an eventual winner such as Myles Borne.

In a move that could prove to be an example of Cena departing WWE and leaving it in the capable hands of the future generation broadly defined as opposed to specifically putting over one star.

2. Carmelo Hayes

After having been drafted in the first round of the WWE Draft 2024, Carmelo Hayes seemed poised for big things.

While he has maintained continued involvement on SmackDown, his character has lost a bit of direction.

With still a ton of untapped potential on the main roster, Melo could be the ideal final opponent for John Cena.

Able to match mic skills (potentially to an even more deadly degree should he be reunited with Trick Williams) as well as physicality, the pair would put on quite the show.

1. Joe Hendry

While it seems improbable, it is always possible that Joe Hendry could meet up with John Cena as the latter’s final opponent.

Seemingly poised to sign with WWE after his current contract with TNA Wrestling expires, WWE has already made a few big investments in Hendry’s future.

Featuring in the Royal Rumble 2025 as well as facing Randy Orton as a mystery opponent at WrestleMania 41 — Hendry has already had a huge year in WWE and he isn’t even signed yet!

It is far more likely the pair could meet face to face to be well in advance of Cena’s final match — it would be fun to see John Cena visiting an episode of NXT to interacting with as many talent as possible.
