With a lot of new faces in WWE in 2025, there has also been a fair few familiar ones making returns to the company after hiatus.
From being out of action entirely to some that were competing in other promotions like TNA Wrestling or AEW, there are some intriguing potential returning stars.
Here are six former WWE Tag Team Champions that could re-sign with the company.
6. Rikishi

Rikishi had numerous notable tag team title runs including when it was the WWF World Tag Team Champion with Samu in The Headshrinkers in 1994.
He would later hold the WWE World Tag Team Championship with Rico in 2002 and then WWE Tag Team Championship with Scott 2 Hotty in 2004.
While Rikishi may not re-sign with WWE for the purposes of in-ring competition, he could definitely be a compelling manager.
With multiple members of the real life Bloodline as yet to debut in the company, perhaps Rikishi will make his return alongside one of them.

5. Billy Gunn

Interestingly, Billy Gunn is a unique case of someone under contract with WWE and AEW at present.
His WWE deal is only a merchandising contract – explaining how he appears in WWE 2K25 as a DLC character – while he is still under a full-time contract with AEW.
While there aren’t specific details known about his current AEW contract – it seems that whenever it is time for Gunn to make decisions about his future there could be multiple factors.
Given his history with Triple H and the future opportunities for his sons, Austin and Colten Gunn as potential benefits, it is possible we could see Billy Gunn return to WWE in the future.

4. Chris Jericho

After losing the ROH World Title to Bandido at AEW Dynasty, Chris Jericho made one more TV appearance before disappearing from AEW.
Per a press release in 2022, Jericho’s contract is set to expire at the end of December 2025, and with his continued conspicuous absence ahead of AEW’s major stadium show – All In Texas – Jericho’s future plans are unknown.
While he had previously shot down the notion that he would return to WWE, in more recent interviews Jericho has seemed more open to the possibility.
With Royal Rumble 2026 set for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in January – we could see one of the most surprising returns in WWE history.

3. Matt & Jeff Hardy

The Hardy Boyz re-signed on new one-year contracts with TNA in late 2024, and since doing so, they have returned to WWE action via NXT.
In an interview in July 2025 with Ariel Helwani, the Hardy Boyz didn’t rule out a return to WWE again – noting that the partnership between the promotions means it could happen while they were still signed.
With their TNA contracts set to expire at the end of 2025 – maybe the legendary pair would re-sign with WWE.
Expressing hope to someday be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, the pair certainly seemed open to another run in the company.

2. Claudio Castagnoli

With seven WWE Tag Team Title reigns to his name – Claudio Castagnoli stands out as one the most decorated tag team wrestlers of the last decade.
When Castagnoli signed with AEW back in 2022, Tony Khan described the contract as a “long-term, multi-year” deal so it seems likely that a return to WWE may not be in the near future.
However with significant history in the company, it would make sense to someday see Claudio Castagnoli – formerly known as Cesaro during his time in WWE – make a return one day.
Having held tag team gold with both Shinsuke Nakamura and Sheamus, Castagnoli could chase championship gold with either of them again or a new partner entirely.

1. Kurt Angle

Kurt Angle was in fact an inaugural WWE World Tag Team Champion, holding the title for 16 days in 2002 with Chris Benoit.
While Angle remains seemingly happy with his current status as being a WWE fan from afar, perhaps one day we’ll see the Olympic Gold medalist make a return.
Always enjoyable to see on-screen, re-signing Kurt Angle for more routine appearances on-screen in WWE could add a nostalgic kick to any storyline.
Perhaps Ivy Nile will look to call in a wise mind to help her solve the growing mystery surrounding El Grande Americano’s identity!
