While there have been many new faces signing with WWE in 2025, there has also been a fair few familiar ones making their returns.
Singles stars such as Rusev and Aleister Black have made an impact since returning post-WrestleMania 41, however, there are also names who previously had great tag team success in WWE who could be in line for a comeback.
Here are six former WWE Tag Team Champions that could potentially re-sign with the company.
6. Billy Gunn

Billy Gunn is a unique case of someone under contract with WWE and AEW at present. While his WWE deal is only a merchandising contract (which explains his WWE 2K25 inclusion as a DLC character), he is still under an actual full-time contract with AEW.
While Billy Gunn continues to appear on AEW TV in support of former Acclaimed partner Anthony Bowens, his real-life sons Austin & Colten Gunn have been absent.
Colten & Austin Gunn’s AEW contract details are not publicly known, although they did reportedly sign ‘multi-year deals’ in February 2023.
Given Billy Gunn’s significant history in WWE and Triple H, there is definitely a foundation there for a future that could see all three Gunns in WWE one day in the next few years.

5. The Hardy Boyz

Not only do Matt & Jeff Hardy remain WWE fan favorites – but there is also still unfinished business for the accomplished duo.
Having never had a proper feud against The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods), Matt Hardy has publicly commented on the teams he hopes to face off with in the future.
The Hardy Boyz re-signed on new one year contracts with TNA in late 2024, and since doing so they have returned to WWE action via NXT.
With the partnership between WWE and TNA Wrestling leading to talent appearing across shows, perhaps the legendary tag team could be returning to WWE sooner rather than later for one final run and a Hall of Fame induction.

4. Claudio Castagnoli

With seven WWE Tag Team Title reigns to his name – Claudio Castagnoli stands tall as one the most decorated tag team wrestlers of the last decade.
Recently getting a shout out from John Cena on WWE SmackDown, Claudio Castagnoli remains signed with AEW and active in a major angle with Jon Moxley and the Deathriders.
When Castagnoli signed with AEW back in 2022, Tony Khan described the contract as a “long-term, multi-year” deal so it seems likely that any possible reunion with Sheamus may have to wait.
While he also held tag gold with Shinsuke Nakamura, a reunion of The Bar would be exactly what WWE’s tag team division needs, especially on Raw.

3. Chris Jericho

While he remains signed to AEW, Chris Jericho is currently off of television after losing the ROH World Championship at the Dynasty pay-per-view.
Jericho is obviously more known for his success as a singles star, however, what often gets forgotten are his five tag team title reigns in WWE.
Holding WWE Tag Team gold with The Big Show, The Rock, Christian, Edge and Chris Benoit – Jericho could potentially find himself re-entering the division should he re-sign with the company following the expiry of his AEW deal at the end of 2025.
Whether it be reuniting with someone like Kevin Owens, or teaming with an upstart from NXT – Jericho could potentially add WWE Tag Team Title run number six to his résumé.

2. Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder

Long time tag team partners Brian Myers and Matt Cardona remain active in professional wrestling, finding great success outside of WWE following their releases in 2020.
However, the former two-time WWE Tag Team Champions remain names that fans always hoped would make a return to the company some day.
Given their continued evolution beyond WWE, it would be incredible to see what the modern version of Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder could do in WWE.
With John Cena also name dropping Matt Cardona recently on WWE TV, perhaps we could actually see the pair pop back up again one day.

1. Shane McMahon

While this entry is mostly for fun, Shane McMahon has previously been signed to WWE under a talent contract – something that is not the case as of right now.
Let us not forget – Shane McMahon is a former WWE Tag Team Champion, holding the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships with The Miz for 21 days back in 2019.
While the duo would go on to lose the titles to Jimmy & Jey Uso, it doesn’t negate the fact it happened.
With his much speculated move to AEW not happening, a return to WWE is the likelier outcome should Shane-O-Mac make his way back into the wrestling business.
