With an impressive list of legendary names that have held the WWE Tag Team Championship, there could be some returning.

From pairs that seem very likely to return to a WWE Hall of Famer who could make his way back — there are some intriguing options of who may make a reappearance in the future.

Here are seven former WWE tag team champions that could re-sign with the company in the future.

7. Matt & Jeff Hardy

The legendary tag team of Matt and Jeff Hardy made history again recently when they captured the NXT Tag Team titles for the first time in their careers.

Holding both the TNA Wrestling and NXT Tag Team Championship, the Hardy Boyz took on old foes the Dudley Boyz (D-Von & Bubba Ray Dudley) in tag team action at TNA Bound For Glory on October 12.

Dropping the NXT tag titles back to the DarkState duo of Dion Lennox & Osiris Griffin, Matt and Jeff Hardy could be making their next WWE appearance back on the main roster.

With the pair having previously revealed that their current contracts with TNA Wrestling end in November 2025 — the Hardy Boyz could be back in WWE action soon.

6. Chris Jericho

AEW star Chris Jericho

After losing the ROH World Title to Bandido at AEW Dynasty in April, Chris Jericho made a dramatic exit in storyline from his Learning Tree group.

Writing himself off of TV ahead of an upcoming set of concert dates for Fozzy, Jericho’s conspicuous absence has continued which has not gone unnoticed from fans.

With rumors swirling that he could be headed back to WWE, Jericho himself hasn’t ruled out the possibility. When recently asked about Jericho, AEW CEO Tony Khan spoke highly of the legend and noted he was always welcome in AEW.

A multiple time tag team champion, Jericho won World Tag Team titles with an impressive line-up of partners including the Big Show, Edge, Christian, The Rock and Chris Benoit.

5. The IInspiration (IIconics)

One pair of former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions that have recently returned to TV action are  the IInspiration (Cassie Lee & Jess McKay).

Formerly known as the IIconics during their time in WWE, the duo held the titles for 120 days in 2019, becoming the second ever team to win the titles.

While the pair continue as current TNA Knockouts Tag Team Champions, they are reportedly not under a contract with the company.

Since the duo are free agents, they could certainly arrive in WWE sooner rather than later. After getting a positive crowd reception when they returned as a part of a recent crossover, it seems that NXT fans would be thrilled to see the pair sign.

4. The Big Show

A decorated former tag team champion, Paul Wight boasts an impressive list of co-champions from throughout his legendary career.

While he was WCW Tag Team Champions alongside Lex Luger, Sting, Scott Hall — he would continue a dominant tag team champ after joining WWE.

Winning tag team titles in WWE with The Undertaker, Kane, Chris Jericho and The Miz, it would be very cool to see The Big Show make a WWE return in the future.

Although he remains under contract with AEW, it could be that when his time with Tony Khan’s company comes to an end, we could see Paul Wight return to WWE.

3. Edge

AEW star Adam Copeland

After departing WWE, Edge would go on to continue his in-ring career in AEW under his actual name, Adam Copeland.

Notable for his time in tag team competition in WWE, Copeland held titles with the likes of Christian, Hulk Hogan, Rey Mysterio, Chris Benoit, Randy Orton and Chris Jericho — Copeland has yet to claim tag team gold in AEW.

While returning for another tag team title run in WWE is possible, it isn’t particularly probable. With Copeland mentioning in interviews that he may look to retire at the end of his current contract.

Previously pointing to his AEW contract ending October 2026, the WWE Hall of Famer could instead elect to hang up his boots for good and retire from in-ring competition.

2. Shayna Baszler

One former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion that could absolutely make a return in the near future is Shayna Baszler.

Previously winning the titles twice with Nia Jax as well as another time with Ronda Rousey, Baszler could be the perfect surprise return.

While the recent reports regarding the upcoming women’s WarGames match noted Nia Jax was on the heel team, it also included an interesting pick in NXT star, Lash Legend.

With Legend yet to make her official main roster debut, perhaps her inclusion was actually a red herring for another heel — like a returning Baszler.

1. Matt Cardona

Matt Cardona has not been shy about voicing his desire to return to WWE.

After being released in 2020, he reinvented himself on the indies, but has spoken many times recently about wanting to sign with WWE once again.

He has returned as part of the TNA crossovers, having his first match on WWE programming in over five years, which was a loss to Josh Briggs.

Given how popular he was with fans as part of that crossover appearance, perhaps WWE will be open to the possibility of a comeback.
