With an illustrious history across decades, there have been some major names that have held the WWE Tag Team Championship that could return.

Ranging from being gone only months to having spent many years away from WWE, there is a group of former WWE Tag Team Champions that seem like they definitely could return “home” one day.

Here are eight former WWE Tag Team Champions who could re-sign with the company.

8. Chris Jericho

One former WWE Tag Team Champion that already has rumors swirling regarding his potential return to the company is Chris Jericho.

While Jericho reportedly remains under contract with AEW through 2025, he could return to WWE as early as January 2026.

With John Cena finishing his wildly popular WWE farewell tour in December, perhaps it could be Jericho who could pick up where Cena leaves off in terms of nostalgic attractions.

Making for an iconic Royal Rumble surprise for the first ever Royal Rumble in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2026, it would make complete sense to see Jericho wrap up his in-ring career in WWE.

7. Matt and Jeff Hardy

The Hardy Boyz at WWE SummerSlam 2025

Two of the most notable tag team champions in WWE history are Matt and Jeff Hardy.

The duo remains in current action in TNA Wrestling but seem to be future shoo-ins for induction into the WWE Hall of Fame.

While it seems likely that the duo will return to WWE when their current contract with TNA Wrestling ends, only time will tell what actually comes to pass.

With the ability to bill the return and retirement of Matt & Jeff Hardy as a very special reason for fans to both tune but also turn up to buy tickets to events – the return of Hardy Boyz would be big business for WWE.

6. The IInspiration FKA IIconics (Cassie Lee & Jess McKay)

Since departing from WWE, Cassie Lee and Jess McKay each took time off from wrestling to start families before recently reuniting in the ring.

Having already made a return to professional wrestling in TNA Wrestling, it would seem that the next step may be a WWE return.

Incredibly entertaining and fun performers to watch both during in-ring work, talking and backstage segments – the pair would add a lot to the fledgling WWE Women’s Tag Team division.

Potentially being a future crossover with TNA Wrestling’s continued partnership with NXT, the duo could easily face-off against the likes of current WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss.

5. Braun Strowman

Former WWE star Braun Strowman

Although he was just released from WWE in May 2025, fans haven’t technically seen the last of Braun Strowman just yet.

Already signed on for a USA Network series about travel and food on the road as a WWE star, reportedly the show is still airing this Fall.

Potentially coming back as more of a special attraction star versus a full time member of the roster, Strowman could make his return to WWE sooner rather than later to promote the show.

For instance, Strowman could always pop back around to face off against Brock Lesnar in a re-match of their No Mercy 2017 Universal title bout.

4. Shayna Baszler

Shayna Baszler was also released from WWE in May 2025 after having spent eight years with the company.

However during her non-compete clause, Baszler had an informal role backstage in NXT –  even ending up producing a match for TV.

During her tenure in the company, Baszler was not only a singles champ in NXT, she also won the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship three times

While twice she teamed with Nia Jax, she captured the titles once with Ronda Rousey as well.

3. Paul Wight

AEW's Paul Wight

Another potential defector from AEW could be Paul Wight, formerly known as The Big Show in WWE.

While Wight confirmed back in May 2025 that he was still happily under contract with AEW – perhaps there are a few more things left for The Big Show to do in WWE.

Perhaps able to appear as an in-ring special attraction, Wight’s abilities also extend to such realms as backstage interviewing and commentary making him an ideal snag for WWE in the future.

Namely Paul Wight remains absent from the WWE Hall of Fame, an induction that seems likely in the future event he departs AEW.

Mercedes Mone has achieved unprecedented levels of success since joining AEW, reigning as TBS Champion for over 450 days, and currently holding nine championships from promotions around the world.

However, there will always be a question mark about a potential return to WWE as Sasha Banks.

When she first joined AEW, Mone even said in an interview that she expected to be back in WWE some day.

Of course, things could have changed since then, but if she still believes that to be the case, it’s just a matter of how long it’ll take to happen.

1. Shane McMahon

The last time Shane McMahon appeared in WWE was WrestleMania 39 in 2023, which didn’t go to plan.

McMahon’s match with The Miz went off the rails after just a few seconds as McMahon injured himself attempting a leapfrog.

Much has changed in WWE since then, but McMahon may still want to have one last chance to put on a show and leave fans with a better final memory of him in the ring.
