While we have seen more AEW stars depart in favor of a move to WWE in 2025, the remainder of the year could be a different story – with many former WWE stars on the free agent market.
From stars that were recently released, to Hall of Famers with versatile skills, there are some intriguing names that AEW could look to recruit.
Here are five former WWE champions who could join AEW.
5. Bishop Dyer (Baron Corbin)

A staple performer on WWE for over a decade as Baron Corbin, the former United States Champion has undergone a reinvention since announcing his departure from the company in November 2024.
Now going by the ring name Bishop Dyer, he is one of the more surprising names to exit in recent years given his lengthy tenure and ability to perform in whatever role the company needed him to play.
While he has gone on to resume competing in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, he has also appeared for several other promotions including Maple Leaf Pro and MLW.
Potentially able to join up with real life pal MJF for an on-screen partnership, or even show up alongside fellow WWE alum Dijak – Bishop Dyer would be a solid pick-up for AEW.

4. Beth Phoenix

WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix surprised fans when she announced last summer that she was no longer under WWE contract.
With speculation at the time that she could be headed for AEW now come and gone – perhaps now would be the best time for a surprise appearance.
Bringing her veteran experience, the former Glamazon could add a lot to the growing women’s division.
From backstage mentorship to an on-screen role or even commentary – Beth Phoenix has a lot to contribute.

3. Shayna Baszler

Being released from WWE in May, Shayna Baszler has been under a non-compete clause until it expired at the beginning of this month.
While she was spotted in her off time at the NXT Performance Center, even being listed as a backstage producer – there is no indication that she’s ready to hang up her boots just yet.
Rather, Baszler has commented that she could see herself continuing to wrestle as she has more stories left to tell.
Given the more brutal and physical nature of AEW, Shayna Baszler would likely be able to recapture her previous NXT “Queen of Spades” dominance.

2. Braun Strowman

While his in-ring capabilities have gotten more limited over time, Braun Strowman remains an undeniable attraction.
With WWE fans having enjoyed his brute strength as well as unique displays of agility – a man of his size running laps around the ring is still impressive.
Since AEW is known for having a flair for the more fun characters, perhaps Strowman could find a role as a special attraction.
Popping up for special occasions or as a hired gun for specifically some dastardly heel – there could be a role for Strowman in AEW.

1. Dakota Kai

After being released in the most recent WWE roster cuts in May 2025, Dakota Kai’s future remains uncertain.
Seemingly a top choice to be picked up by another promotion, fans are hopeful that the former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion will continue to compete at a high level.
Potentially able to debut at AEW Forbidden Door 2025, Dakota Kai could become a fixture in AEW straight away.
As popular with her peers as she is with fans, Dakota Kai would make an excellent addition to the AEW women’s locker room.
