With John Cena poised to compete in his last ever SummerSlam, there are still more WWE events set for Cena in 2025.
While Cena could continue his reign as Undisputed WWE Champion, it is also possible that there are still more storylines for the longtime star yet to be revealed before his retirement.
Here are five WWE plans for John Cena as his farewell tour begins to wind down.
5. “Real” John Cena
While John Cena has pledged to proceed with his time remaining in WWE as the “real” John Cena, there was an ominous air to his comments.
Warning Cody Rhodes that they were set to do battle in a violent street fight match at SummerSlam 2025, he was sure to remind that the stipulation was what Cody wanted.
With his history as a longstanding babyface in his past, Cena seemingly looks to pivot from the over-the-top-heelishness, but didn’t actually make any promises to be a good guy.
Perhaps these final few months see the debut of the “real” John Cena in WWE – one that blends hard work and loyalty with direct honesty, even if his truth isn’t what fans want to hear.

4. Lead A Faction
Before he retires, it would be fun to see John Cena having more backstage interactions with a variety of talents on the roster instead of only interacting with top stars.
In his final months in WWE, John Cena could maximize his impact if he were to collect a stable of his own to be a presence even after his retirement.
Potentially collecting stars who were touted as “the next John Cena,” over their careers like Austin Theory and even newer talent – the group would leave room for some signature Cena backstage comedy.
In the event Cena loses the Undisputed WWE Championship well in advance of his official departure in December, the side quests that could occur in between could be a lot of fun.

3. John Cena vs. The Rock
On the August 1 edition of WWE SmackDown, it seemed as though John Cena came to the ring and was vulnerable with fans about his retirement run thus far.
Sharing his regrets about his recent behavior, Cena noted the fundamentals of honesty and hard work as the foundation of his career – but that he “flushed it all down the toilet, chasing false glory when I bought into someone’s crazy idea to make shocking TV…”
He would then go on to seemingly reference The Rock and Travis Scott, noting that “the people who were supposed to be on my team” left, and left him all alone.
With motivation now to put his foot down against the corporate overlord figure of the Final Boss – perhaps we haven’t really seen the last ever showdown between John Cena and The Rock.

2. The John Cena Avengers
Along the lines of leading a faction, John Cena might need to spearhead an elite group of top stars in order to save WWE from a combination of top heels.
Whether it is The Rock or someone – or something – else entirely, it would be intriguing to see Cena select a specific group of torch holders for the future.
Rather than the emphasis being on “fun”, this Cena-led faction would be very serious with the likes of Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton and Sami Zayn.
The group could also include a beacon of hope for the future with plenty of talented up-and-coming stars in NXT like Ricky Saints, Je’Von Evans and Myles Borne to choose from.

1. Save Pro Wrestling from GUNTHER
Heel John Cena made his mission statement clear in WWE – he was going to ruin professional wrestling.
He would go on to wage war on many of the things fans held dear including top babyfaces, his own image included.
Now that Cena has seemingly turned babyface again, his motive may be forced to shift into saving professional wrestling.
With rumors that GUNTHER is set to be Cena’s final opponent, it would make total sense to see GUNTHER attempt to burn down the candy-colored, kid friendly version of professional wrestling, and for John Cena to fight back against him.
