A name is a very important detail to a character and there are several current AEW stars who would benefit from undergoing a change.

From slight variations to something entirely different, change can be a good thing and there are several AEW stars that deserve a boost to their current characters.

Here are seven AEW stars that could undergo name changes sometime soon.

7. FTR & Stokely Hathaway

This pair of name changes have recently made their way onto AEW TV.

Now that he has joined forces with FTR, Stokely Hathaway has dropped the surname and will now be referred to as simply Stokely, which has been made official on the AEW roster page.

FTR on the other hand haven’t seen a proper name change, but their entrance graphics went from reading “living legends” to “living legend killers”.

Since Dax Harwood is often announced as “Dax the Axe”, perhaps Cash Wheeler needs a new heel nickname just to join in with the rest of the group – he was referred to as “Cash Money” in the past by MJF when FTR were in the Pinaccle.

6. Skye Blue

After being out of action due to injury since July 2024, there is not currently a return timeframe being officially reported for Skye Blue.

When AEW fans last saw her was on the AEW All Out Zero Hour where she was assaulted with her own crutches at the hands of Mariah May.

However, if she were to return with a new character or new name to mark her new era – after having overcome a significant ankle injury to get back into the ring – she would undoubtedly have a lot of fan support.

Since her actual first name is Skylar, the change wouldn’t have to be significant but something to mark the new place in her career after a long absence.

5. Tay Melo

Another star who has had a long in-ring absence, albeit for anentirely different reason, is Tay Melo.

Taking time off to have a baby girl with husband and fellow AEW star Sammy Guevara, Tay Melo has yet to return to AEW TV.

Melo did return to the ring for STARDOM in January, but has yet to make a re-appearance in AEW.

Able to tap into her new lifestyle as a mother, Melo could ignite a brand new over the top character that could end up rivaling ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm, which could come coupled with a new name, even if it’s adopting the name of her husband to become Tay Guevara if the relationship will be played up on screen like it has been in the past.

4. Big Bill

AEW star Big Bill, formerly Big Cass in WWE

If the Learning Tree faction is actually coming to an end in AEW, probably both the ‘Bad Apple’ Bryan Keith and Big Bill could use name changes. While it is easy enough for Keith to simply drop the ‘Bad Apple’ – Big Bill might want to look for something else entirely.

While he was aligned with Chris Jericho, the name Big Bill was a decent fit – because as names tend to be when they’re assigned by Jericho, it was simple.

But if he is striking out on his moving forward, it would make sense for him to get a new name.

He could stick with the Big theme and switch it up to his actual surname making him Big Morrissey or some shortened version. Or depending on interest in nostalgia (and likely trademark ownership), some version of his former WWE name Colin Cassady or Big Cass could also be an option.

3. Kris Statlander

AEW fan favorite Kris Statlander doesn’t need to change anything about her in-ring presence or promos to boost her fan likability – but a little bit more character cohesion could be crafted through a simple name change.

While Jamie Hayter didn’t have a name change, she returned from injury with a very distinct and specific new aesthetic to her character, and Kris Statlander could benefit from a similar reinvention.

Simply dropping her name to a single name – Stat, Statlander or something entirely different perhaps – could already help her stand out.

Re-branding Statlander in a mindfully marketing focused way isn’t the most punk rock strategy but would be beneficial to selling some merch and bolstering overall mainstream recognition ala ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm.

2. Britt Baker

One star who has been absent from AEW recently that could desperately use a character refresh is Britt Baker.

Perhaps with a new name and a switched up on-screen attitude, there could be an entirely different life for her in AEW, distancing herself from her real-life occupation as a dentist.

She could be fun to align with Mercedes Mone and take on a ‘Hollywood Britt’ gimmick.

That way, her absence from AEW could be explained as being fame related, making her a mega obnoxious heel.

1. Private Party

Last seen in AEW in their Tag Team Title loss to the Hurt Syndicate on the January 22, 2025 episode of AEW Dynamite, Private Party aren’t out of action due to injury.

The pair were in action at HOG City Of Dreamz show in March, but have yet to reappear in AEW.

However, if they were to return as individually beaten down characters, having lost their high rolling party lifestyle due to the tag title loss – their tag team name could change temporarily.

With their fight to claw back to the top of the AEW tag team division, if or when they’re able to reclaim the AEW Tag Team Championship – they could return to the VIP section and be Private Party again.
