With AEW Forbidden Door 2025 coming up on August 24, there are sure to be some memorable moments and surprises in store.
From potential returns to brand new stars that could be debuting — there seems to be some intriguing twists and turns yet to be revealed before AEW wraps up a big summer in 2025.
Here are six potential surprises at AEW Forbidden Door 2025.
6. MJF Reunites With Wardlow

Since being ousted from the Hurt Syndicate, MJF’s character is at a serious tipping point.
While he has proclaimed in the past to not trust anyone — he has yet again found himself aligned with someone new who has turned their back on him. Perhaps it isn’t that MJF can’t trust anyone, he just doesn’t need any new friends.
With Wardlow continuing to be conspicuously absent from AEW but seemingly able to return — there’s actually a case to be made for MJF turning to a familiar face in a time of need.
Potentially looking to recruit from elsewhere entirely on the AEW roster — MJF could make it clear he wasn’t planning on reclaiming his AEW World Championship without back-up just because the Syndicate dumped him.

5. Eddie Kingston Returns

After having suffering a serious leg injury back in June 2024, Eddie Kingston has continued to do the work in rehab to get back into action.
Given that injury occurred during a NJPW match against Gabe Kidd where he was suplexed through a table and his leg hit the barricade resulting in a broken tibia, torn meniscus and a torn ACL
While there is no return date set for Kingston, he could be approaching a return sometime in the near future.
Since Forbidden Door is the annual crossover event between NJPW and AEW, it would be great to see Eddie even if just for an on-screen appearance on commentary.

4. Former WWE Star Debuts

With each AEW pay-per-view, it seems possible that a brand new star could debut in the company.
Since Forbidden Door is a crossover event, there may already be new faces in action from NJPW, STARDOM or CMLL — but a debut from a former WWE star is also entirely possible in London.
There are a few possibilities of recently released WWE stars that could make their debut appearances at Forbidden Door — Isla Dawn, Dakota Kai and Shayna Baszler among those that could be liable to pop-up.
With the AEW Women’s division continuing to attract top talent, any of the recently released women from WWE could certainly make an impact.

3. Zack Sabre Jr Faces Nigel McGuinness

While there is already a IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match set for AEW Forbidden Door —it has yet to be revealed who will face champ Zack Sabre Jr.
The AEW star who wins the upcoming “Technical Spectacle” on AEW Collision (August 16) will go on to get a shot at ZSJ.
The match is set to feature Hechicero, Lee Moriarty, Daniel Garcia and Nigel McGuinness squaring of to determine who will move on to Forbidden Door.
With Forbidden Door being held in London, it makes perfect sense for Nigel McGuinness to be the one to secure a match at the big event — but perhaps the win will require some hijinks.

2. Swerve Strickland Defeats Kazuchika Okada

At AEW Forbidden Door, Swerve Strickland is set to challenge Kazuchika Okada for the recently introduced AEW Unified Championship.
Although there are plenty of surprises that could go down in this match, Swerve Strickland should win this bout.
Although the result wouldn’t be a huge shock, it is a surprise given that Okada’s previous Continental title reign has lasted over 500 days before being unified with the International Championship.
Potentially setting up multiple future feuds for Swerve, it may be that Forbidden Door is the right time to make the move to end Okada’s long reign as an AEW champion.

1. Hiroshi Tanahashi’s Opponent Kept Secret

Currently it is still unknown who will face Hiroshi Tanahashi at AEW Forbidden Door but there is set to be a match featuring the NJPW legend.
Rather than announce the match in advance, it could be a fun twist and shocking moment to reveal at the time of the match that Tanahashi’s opponent was Katsuyori Shibata.
While Tanahashi has commented that he would like to face current AEW star Katsuyori Shibata again before retiring — maybe now is the time.
With the pair already facing off once in a five-minute exhibition match that ended in a draw at Wrestle Dynasty in Tokyo back in January, perhaps there will be more to see at Forbidden Door 2025.
