WWE decided it would be a good time to break the internet when they officially opened up their Forbidden Door.
Pro Wrestling NOAH announced that WWE’s Shinsuke Nakamura would be returning to the promotion on January 1, taking on the Great Muta at NOAH’s New Year’s show.
This, alongside Karl Anderson still holding the NEVER Openweight Championship as part of an ongoing storyline with New Japan Pro Wrestling, has led to speculation that WWE’s Forbidden Door is at least slightly ajar.
Ajar is enough to get some exciting matches going though, so here are 10 WWE Forbidden Door matches that could happen.
The list will feature no double ups, meaning a person will only be listed once, and will not feature anybody contracted to AEW, because yeah that isn’t happening.
10) The Usos vs. Aussie Open

The natural first thought was Usos vs FTR, but despite being the IWGP Tag Team Champions, FTR are contracted to AEW, so that won’t be happening.
Aussie Open are the best tag team available, and are arguably one of the top tag teams in the world in their own right, so this match would be awesome to see.
9) KAIRI vs. Sasha Banks

So, that Instagram post.
Sasha and Kairi both shared a fan made graphic of a potential match in Stardom between the two of them that was even retweeted by the official STARDOM Twitter account.
Many assumed that the match could happen should Sasha ultimately leave WWE, but now we learned that does not even have to be the case.
Sasha and WWE are reportedly having hold ups on a new deal, and she’s valuable enough to them that her asking to work dates in Stardom would be something they’d consider adding to her contract.
So maybe Sasha is staying in WWE, but the match will still happen anyway, who is to say.
8) Bianca Belair vs. Miyu Yamashita

I also wanted this to be Sasha, and realistically if she comes back to WWE it likely would be, but I already used her on this list.
Sasha recently trained with Miyu Yamashita, getting fans excited about a potential match between the two, but Sasha is far from the only woman who Miyu would have a banger with.
Bianca Belair is on the top of her game right now, and TJPW’s ace going toe to toe with, arguably, WWE’s women’s ace would make for something special.
7) Gunther vs. Tomohiro Ishii

Yes this match has already happened before, but so has Nakamura vs Muta.
Gunther and Ishii, while both big names when they faced off in RevPro back in 2018, have become even more popular after both men’s appearance on US television.
WWE’s Intercontinental Champion and the Stone Pitbull chopping the life out of each other, I can hear the noise from here.
6) Sheamus In The G1 Climax

Sheamus has found himself having banger after banger after banger as he continues to go through arguably his greatest run in his entire career.
This isn’t one specific match, but seeing Sheamus tear through the G1 is something of dreams.
Sheamus would lock up with all of NJPW’s top stars as they beat each other up until they’re completely sore.
And yes, it would of course be banger after banger after banger.
5) Rey Mysterio vs. Hijo Del Vikingo

So exciting AAA star Hijo Del Vikingo recently got a visa to work in the United States, with US fans now waiting his arrival so they can see him do his thing.
However, he would not need a work visa to wrestle the greatest mask of all time if WWE sent him down to Mexico.
Rey recorded a video for AAA’s TripleMania XXX event, a show which saw Vikingo take on Rey Fenix.
Rey has also spoken highly of Vikingo in the past, so this honestly, somehow, feels entirely possible.
4) IYO SKY vs. Utami Hayashishita

WWE sending Nakamura to NOAH was a deal where someone who was previously a big star in one promotion returns for a one off match. That explains IYO SKY to STARDOM.
IYO was reportedly considering a return to Japan when her WWE deal was expiring, so there’s clearly some interest to work with the company again.
Utami Hayashishita has spoken about how she joined STARDOM with hopes of one day wrestling IYO, but IYO left for WWE shortly after Utami’s arrival.
Utami is the current leader of Queen’s Quest, the group which was formed by IYO, so it would be the group’s first leader taking on the group’s current leader in an epic clash.
I promise I did not plan this, but that is the absolute perfect segue into our next match…
3) Jay White vs. Finn Balor

Jay White is the current leader of Bullet Club, the group which was formed by Balor, so it would be the group’s first leader taking on the group’s current leader in an epic clash.
2) Roman Reigns vs. Kazuchika Okada

I genuinely believe the universe might implode on itself if we ever see Roman Reigns and Kazuchika Okada in the same ring. The thought of that hurts my brain even thinking about it.
This match is so high because of course it is, imagine it. However, I will be realistic in saying that I doubt WWE would send a star like Roman to NJPW, especially to lose, while NJPW would probably not book an outsider to go over on Okada.
1) Seth ‘Freakin’ Rollins vs. Will Ospreay

Three years of history between two men who are on top of their game right now, Will Ospreay taking on Seth Rollins would be a major match.
Ospreay will likely walk through the door and face Kenny Omega in a singles match soon, and that is also a huge match with a lot of story there, but once that’s sorted, if there is any way on earth to get Ospreay vs Rollins, get it done.
