Early next month, Joe Hendry releases his first album as a WWE star, following in the footsteps of legends when it comes to music endeavors.
“Beyond Belief” is set for release on October 5 by WWE Music, with eleven tracks including “Give Joe Hendry Every Single Belt” and “Fire Logan Paul”.
Hendry isn’t the first WWE star to lay down the tracks, although he’s arguably one of the more talented to do so. Here’s a handful of names who paved the way for the upcoming release:
Michael Hayes
Vice President, Creative Writing & Booking in WWE, Michael Hayes was a member of the legendary faction The Fabulous Freebirds who were accompanied to the ring by the track “Badstreet USA”, performed by the star and his Badstreet Band.
Hayes would record the album ‘Off the Streets’ in 1987, and would later contribute his vocals to ‘Big’, The Big Show’s WWE theme until 2006. 2011 would see that star pay tribute to Terry Gordy of The Fabulous Freebirds with the track ‘Freebird Road’.
Lilian Garcia
Over the years, Lilian Garcia’s vocal talents have been recognized by WWE audiences, with the veteran ring announcer being well known for her rendition of the American national anthem.
In 2005, the star released ¡Quiero Vivir!, an album that featured ten Spanish-language tracks (with two translated into English), having previously contributed to the WWE Anthology albums. Her 2002 single ‘Shout’ would also make the Billboard charts.
John Cena
The Doctor of Thuganomics, John Cena turned “hustle, loyalty and respect” into an actual album full of rap music.
Released in 2005, ‘You Can’t See Me’ reached number 3 on the Billboard rap albums chart, with the star more recently contributing to the Peacemaker soundtrack back in 2022, playing piano for the track ‘Home Sweet Home’.
Elias
2018’s ‘Walk With Elias’ and 2020’s ‘Universal Truth’ were both released by WWE Music, with the guitar-playing star providing vocals to the tracks produced by CFO$. Not so much albums as EPs, both charted in the iTunes list of Top 100 US albums, with ‘Universal Truth’ reaching number 1 on its day of release in the Soundtracks category.
R-Truth
A hip-hop artist before he stepped in the wrestling ring, the WWE star known as R-Truth has a number of albums to his name, with his most recent release in that genre being Legacy, unleashed upon the world in 2021.
August of last year saw Ron Killings branch out with his first country album, The White Album, which blended rap, soul and pop for a distinct sound. It charted at number 10 on the Billboard Country Chart, marking a first for the WWE star.
More Names Have Stepped Into The Booth
Over the decades, many names well known to WWE fans have stepped into the recording booth, with varying degrees of success.
WWE would release a number of Anthology compilation albums, typically featuring entrance music and tracks that were popular in whatever year they were released, although the history of the company when it comes to music goes back further. The Wrestling Album was released in 1985, featuring a number of then-WWF stars on vocals, with that entry in the music/wrestling crossover followed by Piledriver: The Wrestling Album II. Both albums were produced by ‘The Hit Factory’, with WrestleMania: The Album in 1993 being overseen by UK music producers Mike Stock & Pete Waterman and Simon Cowell, long before his American Idol days, as executive producer.
Hulk Hogan would also release an album in the 90s, with Macho Man Randy Savage getting in on the action in 2003 with his rap album ‘Be A Man’ which featured a diss track on his rival that came to nothing.
When it comes to actual musicians, Chris Jericho, lead singer of the band Fozzy, is perhaps the best known, with Jeff Hardy leading Peroxwhy?gen.
As for Hendry’s upcoming album, the first music video was recently released in the form of ‘Give Joe Hendry Every Single Belt (Right Now)’
