A WWE legend has revealed scrapped in-ring return plans following a creative disagreement.

It has been over a decade since WWE Hall of Famer John Bradshaw Layfield last competed inside a wrestling ring for a major promotion, with his last WWE match being a brief cameo in the 2014 Royal Rumble Match.

However, a JBL in-ring return seemed to potentially be on the horizon following a string of appearances on the independent scene, as well as in TNA and AAA – with JBL laying out stars with Clothelines for the first time in may years.

Speaking with TMZ Inside The Ring, JBL was asked about a potential in-ring return, to which the former WWE Champion revealed details regarding scrapped plans to do just that in TNA.

Citing a change in creative leadership as the reason his TNA in-ring appearance didn’t pan out, JBL said:

“Yeah, you know I was gonna do it last year and it didn’t work out. I was gonna do something in TNA and it didn’t work out.

“They had a creative change and I didn’t like what the creative was, I didn’t think it was good for business, good for me or anything, so I told them I’m not really interested in doing it, so I walked out of it.

“I still have a good relationship with them, the guy who made the creative change got fired about a week or two later and then WWE partnered with them so it never came back to fruition.”

JBL then revealed that he was also going to “do something” in AAA, but WWE’s purchase of the company put an end to that as well:

“But yeah I was gonna do something in TNA and I was gonna do something in AAA in Mexico and then all of a sudden WWE buys them.

“They made me a commentator so, I’m glad they kept me but they took me out of the ring. Maybe that was a hint to me.”

The WWE Hall of Famer then discussed his current in-ring training with Jody Malenko and Gerald Briscoe, admitting that he’s just having fun, rather than knowing exactly what it will lead to:

Jody Malenko is the great (Boris) Malenko’s son, Dean Malenko’s brother and one of the number one students of Karl Gotch possibly, a lot of people agree, the greatest shooter of all-time and Jody’s been helping me train, so has Mr. Briscoe.

I’ve got a whole garage set up out there with mats and suplex dummies and Persian clubs. I’m having a blast, I’m 59 years old just having fun training. Not sure where’s it’s gonna go, we kind of have an idea but we’re just having a lot of fun.
