An update has emerged on Will Ospreay’s NJPW future, with Ospreay officially set to challenge for one of the promotion’s championships following his return.

Following a brief appearance at January’s NJPW New Year Dash event, Ospreay has now returned to the ring for the promotion.

With Ospreay reuniting with former United Empire teammates Great-O-Khan and HENARE, the trio scored a victory over El Desperado, Taichi and Yuya Uemura at the April 4 Sakura Genesis event.

In backstage comments made after the bout, Ospreay pitched for the group to challenge for the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championship.

The AEW star said:

“That was a bloody good welcome back. Coming back to one of my favorite arenas, Ryōgoku Sumo arena, I’ve had some of the best moments of my career in this building.

“10 years ago was the first time I flew into this beautiful country, all I wanted to be was the adopted son.

“Along the way, we’ve had dips, we’ve had dives, but six years ago, we created something very special, the United Empire. Myself, Great-O-Khan, HENARE, Jeff Cobb – wherever he is these days.

“It’s just nice to know that, even after two years of not being in the same corner as one another, we’re still the most ruthless bastards in the entire locker room.

“I’m throwing this out there to you boys, but I think we’ve done a pretty good job as a trio, so we should probably get some gold to go with that.”

HENARE then pointed out that the trio have never held trios gold together, and Great-O-Khan stated that the three of them will conquer the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championship.

NJPW has now confirmed this match for Wrestling Dontaku Night 2 on May 4, sharing the following preview:

Speaking of Will Ospreay, the Aerial Assassin returned to action at Sakura Genesis to a rapturous reception, and success alongside HENARE and Great-O-Khan over the Hontai team of Yuya Uemura, Taichi and El Desperado.

Backstage, the reunited Empire trio said that they wanted to keep their momentum going, and challenge for the NEVER 6 Man gold; can they overcome the ever impressive Bishamontin?

Also in backstage comments made after Callum Newman’s IWGP Heavyweight Championship win at Sakura Genesis, Ospreay asked the United Empire for backup in AEW, stating that he has “got some trouble at work.”

With Newman teasing striking Ospreay during the AEW star’s NJPW New Year Dash appearance, it has been heavily speculated that the group will eventually turn on the founding member, especially now that Newman holds NJPW’s top title.

Even if it all comes crashing down, it would feel like a full-circle moment to see Ospreay not only win gold in NJPW again, but to win trios gold with two of the earliest members of the stable.
