The role that a former TNA Wrestling World Champion will seemingly occupy upon his return to WWE has been revealed.
Eric Young saw his most recent run in TNA Wrestling come to an end on July 1, with the star confirming he had requested and been granted his release.
With suggestions that Young may be making his way back to WWE, further details on he will be used were revealed on Wrestling Observer Radio.
Dave Meltzer would indicate that there are two layers to Young’s position in WWE, stating:
“He’s gonna be a player/coach. Basically, the role that Shawn Spears has.”
Spears, having previously been Tye Dillinger, returned to WWE in February 2024, performing regularly on NXT.
It seems that Young will follow a similar path on the Tuesday night show, with Alvarez asking:
“So he’ll actually be on NXT TV?”
Meltzer would confirm this to be the case, indicating that Young could be back in two months time, stating:
“NXT as a player/coach is what I was told, yeah.
“I heard September, that could be wrong, but it was from people in WWE. NXT player/coach is the current plan for him.”

A Grand Slam Champion in TNA Wrestling, Eric Young is also a former NXT Tag Team Champion, alongside Alexander Wolfe.
Third Time Lucky?
A seasoned veteran before he first signed with WWE in 2016, Eric Young was a fundamental factor in the fortunes of Sanity, the faction that also featured Alexander Wolfe, Sawyer Fulton, Nikki Cross and Killian Dane, all of whom are no longer under contract, with Cross and the rest of the Wyatt Sicks parting ways earlier this year.
Young would return to WWE in 2022, at the point where Triple H took over creative duties, but would request his release in January the following year when Vince McMahon returned to the company.
It’s clear that Young respects Triple H as a creative mind, declaring the WWE executive “a genius” in past comments, and while he may no longer oversee the NXT product, his DNA is arguably still very much a factor in the current product.
With Young’s last run seeing no TV time for the star, it can only be hoped that he gets to showcase his talents once more on NXT, with the roster no doubt benefiting from his insight in the “coach” role that Meltzer suggests.
The star may no longer be under the TNA Wrestling banner, but the ongoing relationship with WWE no doubt means that he could very well pop up on Impact should the opportunity occur.
