The WWE return of Sin Cara: Could the former character become WWE’s legacy gimmick?

Back in 2011, Mistico would sign with WWE in what was considered the first major signing made in the company by Paul Levesque.

Mistico would debut straight on the WWE main roster as Sin Cara following WrestleMania 27, where his run would go on to become infamous.

When the second Sin Cara was released in 2019, the character was officially shelved, though that may not end up lasting for much longer.

Per PWInsider, there have been discussions about WWE potentially reviving the Sin Cara character soon in what could end up becoming something of a legacy character for the company.

The history of Sin Cara in WWE

After Mistico had violated the WWE wellness policy, Hunico would go on to play Sin Cara Negro on television, ending in a mask vs. mask match, where the original Sin Cara would unmask Hunico.

Hunico would compete in his unmasked character for the next two years, including a tag team with Camacho, who would go on to become Tonga Loa.

Hunico would become Sin Cara once again after Mistico was released from the company, with him returning to NXT to team with Kalisto as part of the Lucha Dragons.

In December 2019, Sin Cara was released from the company, which brought an end not only to Hunico’s run in the company, but the Sin Cara character.

Could the gimmick become a WWE legacy

WWE purchased Lucha Libre AAA back in April 2025, with the company continuing to run the promotion independently from the main roster, though main roster WWE stars have appeared on the show frequently since then.

With WWE looking at bringing back the Sin Cara character, it seems as though we could see WWE reviving their own character to create something of a lucha legacy character of their own.

In Lucha Libre, many characters have been passed down to younger wrestlers to keep the character alive, a modern example being La Parka, with the current La Parka currently working for WWE in AA.

Who could play Sin Cara III?

Per False Finish, WWE is eying Myzteziz Jr. as a potential option to revive the character.

Myzteziz Jr. has only made sporadic appearances for AAA since WWE purchased the company.

Alternatively, the timing of the reports comes at a time where rumours are swirling about Dralistico potentially signing with WWE and AAA amid the end of his AEW contract.

Dralistico had previously wrestled as the second Mistico in CMLL during the time when Mistico was signed to WWE, so him taking on the Sin Cara mantle in WWE if he joins the company would be quite the callback.
