TNA Wrestling World Champion Mike Santana has opened up about his position as the face of the company and being trusted with that role.
Santana is now in his second TNA World Title reign, having won the title back from Frankie Kazarian on the Impact AMC premiere in January.
After betting on himself and leaving AEW, Santana joined TNA Wrestling and as a result has also made numerous appearances in WWE NXT, including at The Theater in Madison Square Garden as a hometown hero in New York this past Tuesday.
In a new interview with Busted Open, Santana commented on being the TNA Champion and representing the brand, saying:
“Being the champion and the face of a promotion is much more than just what you’re doing in the ring. You’re in this position because you’re trusted to represent the company in all aspects.
“Whether it’s media, whether it’s going to another promotion and representing, whether it’s being on TV. The fact that you’re being placed in this spot and being trusted is everything.
“One thing that you always wanna be in this business is reliable, and I think that’s definitely, definitely what the company sees in me. If not, then I wouldn’t be in this position, right?
“Also, in my own personal observations of things, I’m always striving to get better. Whoever thinks that they know it all, they’re not doing it right.
“I’m constantly with the mindset of – like my dad used to say – the top of one mountain is the bottom of another.
“But overall, yes, I am the champion that I knew I could be. Betting on myself and putting all the chips on the table when it came to myself, and saying, ‘Hey, I wanna be at that top level and I’m gonna put in the work, I’m not just gonna say it.’
“And what I’ve done since becoming champion is constantly show and prove why I’m at that level. And honestly, it’s just the beginning, and I feel like I’m only gonna get better.”
