AEW star Will Ospreay is set for an in-ring return in New Japan, reuniting with original members of a prominent faction.
During his absence from the ring, Will Ospreay ventured over to New Japan Pro-Wrestling in January, promising that he would return for a limited number of events when he was healed from injury.
Now, the first of his proposed events has been confirmed, with Ospreay set for an in-ring return to NJPW at Sakura Genesis on April 4.
Ospreay won’t be alone, however, with it being confirmed he will be teaming with HENARE and Great-O-Khan, the latter being the co-founder of United Empire alongside the now-AEW star.
Sharing his thoughts on the reunion and upcoming return, Ospreay tweeted (translated from Japanese):
“April 4th, Ryogoku Kokugikan.
“The original members of United Empire have reunited for the first time in two years.
“Please cheer me on as I return to my favorite arena in the world of pro wrestling, and above all, to my hometown.
“Thank you.”
United Empire face off against Taichi, El Desperado, and the man that Callum Newman defeated in the New Japan Cup final, Yuya Uemura.
This will be Ospreay’s first match in Japan since February 2024, with Bullet Club War Dogs defeating the United Empire in a 10-man Steel Cage bout.
With Newman and Ospreay having recently shared apparent messages of support ahead of AEW All In in London, England later this year, Sakura Genesis may prove to be a further turning point in their relationship.
Ospreay Takes Flight
With seven months on the sidelines, Will Ospreay returned at AEW Revolution, setting his sights on Jon Moxley and the Death Riders.
An aggressive Ospreay would call out Moxley, with the Death Riders leader accepting the challenge for a match AEW Dynasty on April 12.
Having undergone surgery to repair herniated discs in his spinal column, it was the Death Riders who wrote The Aerial Assassin off our screens at last year’s AEW Forbidden Door.
Ospreay has been far from silent during his absence, continuing his work in Pro-Wrestling Eve, the UK-based all-women’s promotion, with the former Dakota Kai making her return at the recent event.
As previously referenced, he would also make a return to NJPW, a promotion with which he has a long history, holding Grand Slam Champion status thanks to his multiple title reigns.
A confident return to the ring on the March 18 episode of AEW Dynamite saw Ospreay victorious over Blake Christian saw Ospreay with the quality star power that has accentuated his career under Tony Khan’s leadership.
Returning with all the fire and energy, it’s hard to imagine Ospreay not continuing the rise to prominence in AEW that started back in 2022 and would see WWE attempt to secure his services during his free agency period.
