An AEW star was originally planned to compete in this year’s AEW Continental Classic, but was replaced due to injury.
Tonight’s episode of AEW Dynamite saw the 2025 AEW Continental Classic officially get underway, with four matches across both the Gold and Blue Leagues taking place throughout the night.
In the opening bout of the Blue League, Jon Moxley took on Mascara Dorada with the Death Riders leader looking to bounce back after suffering back-to-back submission losses to Kyle O’Reilly at AEW Blood & Guts and AEW Full Gear.
Moxley would do just that as instead of tapping out once again, it was this time Moxley who earned the win via submission – with Dorada passing out via a D’Arce Choke.
Before the match however, Excalibur on commentary announced that Moxley’s Full Gear opponent Kyle O’Reilly was also planned to be a part of this year’s Continental Classic, but the Death Riders leader’s post match attack at last Saturday saw him ruled out with injury.
With O’Reilly out of action it was confirmed that Conglomeration stablemate Roderick Strong was the one who took his spot in the C2 Blue League. Strong will kick off his C2 campaign on the special Thanksgiving edition of AEW Collision tomorrow night, taking on The Don Callis Family’s Konosuke Takeshita.
Also in the Blue League, Claudio Castagnoli picked up an opening win against Orange Cassidy in the Blue League on Dynamite – he will now proceed to face off with against stablemate Jon Moxley one-on-one on the December 3 episode of AEW Dynamite.
There was another clash of faction members in the Gold League on tonight’s AEW Dynamite, as Kyle Fletcher secured a big win over reigning Continental Classic winner Kazuchika Okada. Then, later in the show Kevin Knight defeated Darby Allin.
We will provide further updates on Kyle O’Reilly’s status and return as they become available.
