An update has emerged on AEW and NJPW’s ongoing partnership, and AEW stars potentially competing in the G1 Climax tournament.

With NJPW’s biggest tournament to begin in July, there has been some speculation about potential competitors from other promotions participating.

Per Dave Meltzer in his Wrestling Observer Daily Update, there is talk of “a couple” of AEW stars participating in this year’s G1 Climax tournament.

The report highlighted that Bryan Danielson, Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega have done ads for the opening night of G1 Climax 36, which will take place on July 11 at the NOW Arena in Chicago.

The G1 Climax tournament in its current form begins with block action, with an A and B block.

Within each block, all ten wrestlers face every other competitor. The two runners-up from each block face off in playoff/quarter final matches, to determine who will face the A and B block leaders in their respective semifinal matches.

This leads to the G1 Climax final, where the winner earns a shot at the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.

A number of stars have competed in this tournament while under contract with AEW, including Konosuke Takeshita, who won the 2025 G1 Climax 35 tournament, defeating EVIL in the finals.

Takeshita is notably under contract with AEW, NJPW and DDT-Pro, and has been pushed by NJPW since signing a deal with the promotion, notably holding the IWGP Heavyweight Title for 83 days, up until Wrestle Kingdom 20 in January.

With Will Ospreay’s NJPW in-ring return announced for Sakura Genesis, we could see the former United Empire leader continue his storyline with Callum Newman in this year’s tournament.
