Grayson Waller made his first defense of the WWE NXT Championship on this week’s show, putting the title on the line in an open challenge.
EK Prosper was the star who ultimately answered the call, putting in an impressive effort but ultimately coming up short.
Following the September 29 NXT episode, there has been some speculation about the next star to step up to Grayson Waller, who became NXT Champion at the August 30 Heatwave premium live event.
From recent rivals to rising stars, there are a number of competitors we could soon see Waller defend the NXT Championship against.
Here are three potential challengers for Grayson Waller’s NXT Title.
Mason Rook
Mason Rook was originally set to challenge for the NXT Championship on Tuesday’s episode, having defeated Saquon Shugars and former titleholder Tony D’Angelo in a #1 contender’s match on September 15.
With Rook and Waller trading verbal shots in recent segments, WWE had presented Rook as a credible challenger, despite the two-week built.
Unfortunately, Mason Rook wasn’t cleared to compete on September 29, leading to EK Prosper ultimately replacing the #1 contender in an open challenge.
When Mason Rook is cleared to wrestle, it’d make a lot of sense for WWE to pick up where they left off and announce the rescheduled NXT Championship bout.
Saquon Shugars
While Mason Rook did win the #1 contender’s match on the September 15 NXT episode, this was in large part due to interference which removed Saquon Shugars from contention.
Shugars looked like he was closing in on a victory during the match, having taken out Rook and hitting his signature splash on D’Angelo, ahead of Tristan Angels preventing the referee from completing the three-count, and brawling with Shugars at ringside.
With Shugars challenging for Chad Gable’s Intercontinental Championship at the September 25 NXT house show, and competing in multi-man matches for the NXT Title at the non-televised live events on September 27 and 27, it’s clear that WWE has a lot of faith in the star as a title contender.
Following his feud with Angels, it’d make a lot of sense to see Saquon Shugars challenge for Grayson Waller’s gold on NXT TV.
Cruz Montana
Following previous appearances for WWE as a TNA Wrestling star during talent crossover, Cruz Montana’s first match after signing with WWE saw him face Grayson Waller in an NXT Championship #1 contender’s match on the August 11 episode.
After this match ended as a no-contest following interference from the debuting Zilla Fatu, all three stars challenged for Tony D’Angelo’s gold at NXT Heatwave, with Waller ultimately being victorious.
With Cruz Montana also challenging for Grayson Waller’s NXT Title during the September 26 and 27 house shows, he is another name who looks set to remain in the picture for the developmental brand’s top title.
With Montana yet to have a one-on-one match for the NXT Championship, a singles clash with Grayson Waller feels almost inevitable.
