Next WWE NXT Champion after Grayson Waller: Three wrestlers who could defeat the former Raw star for the gold

Grayson Waller is now the WWE NXT Champion, winning the title in a four-way match at the recent Heatwave premium live event.

Former main roster stars holding gold in NXT create interesting dynamics, with the next champion having to dethrone a former Raw or SmackDown star to become champion.

With WWE earmarking a number of stars as top prospects, there are several options for competitors who could eventually stand tall over the former WWE Tag Team Champion.

Here are five stars to potentially become NXT Champion after Grayson Waller.

Mason Rook

The most immediate threat to Grayson Waller’s NXT Championship Reign is Mason Rook, who is the current #1 contender for the developmental brand’s top prize.

Rook defeated Saquon Shugars and Tony D’Angelo to earn a shot at Grayson Waller’s title. While interference from Tristan Angels removed Shugars from the equation, Rook still made a huge statement by pinning former NXT Champion Tony D’Angelo.

The English star has been touted as a big star since arriving on NXT in April, with John Cena sharing multiple nods to the former “Will Kroos”.

With NXT welcoming a number of notable signings this year, Mason Rook could be the first to take home the NXT Championship.

Zilla Fatu

Speaking of star-making debuts, Zilla Fatu was instantly propelled into the main event picture upon arriving in WWE.

The Bloodline family member made his first WWE appearance on the August 11 edition of NXT, attacking Grayson Waller and Cruz Montana in their NXT Championship #1 contender’s match.

His first televised match for the company was for the NXT Title, with Fatu, Waller and Montana competing for Tony D’Angelo’s gold at Heatwave, and Waller walking away victorious.

With Zilla Fatu immediately finding himself in the NXT Championship picture, it feels like it’s only a matter of time until that title is around his waist.

Cruz Montana

Cruz Montana is another star who immediately set his sights on the NXT Title upon joining WWE.

Unfortunately for Montana, other stars have gotten in between him and the NXT Champion, with Zilla Fatu interfering in his aforementioned #1 contender’s match, and the title match at Heatwave involving two other challengers.

While Montana has teamed with EK Prosper in the NXT shows since the August 30 special, it would make sense to see the former TNA World Champion have one more shot at the NXT Championship, this time, one-on-one.
