Currently held by Sami Zayn, the Undisputed WWE Championship is the top title on SmackDown, but who could be the next challenger?
The September 18 episode of WWE SmackDown saw Sami Zayn retain the title against Kevin Owens, with CM Punk and Johnny Gargano all getting involved in the match.
With Money in the Bank taking place on October 10, Roman Reigns will defend the World Heavyweight Championship against LA Knight, but plans for the Undisputed WWE Championship are yet to be revealed.
Regardless of what happens at the upcoming WWE PLE, let’s take a look at some wild card challengers for the top title:
Ricky Saints
A former NXT Champion, Ricky Saints is yet to hold a main roster title, having been called up in May of this year.
For a star whose first SmackDown match saw him challenge Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship, it’s about time that Saints took aim at the top title once again.
That said, he did challenge Trick Williams for the United States Championship at Night of Champions with no success.
Rey Fenix
If Penta can have a highly-regarded match against Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship, it’s highly likely that Rey Fenix would be able to step up to the plate against Sami Zayn.
Sure, it might feel like a copy of what happened over on WWE Raw, but it also gives fans something that they haven’t seen before. Zayn has a past as a masked wrestler, something that could play into such a rivalry.
Kit Wilson
Kit Wilson has found new purpose thanks to the motivation of The Miz Method, and that could lead to the former NXT Tag Team Champion believing that he’s ready to challenge for the top title.
For Wilson, the outcome isn’t likely to be a victory, but it certainly would be entertaining and could potentially lead to the star realizing that The Miz doesn’t have his best interests at heart, particularly if he were to cost his protege the match.
New Challengers, Assemble
CM Punk and Kevin Owens have both targeted Sami Zayn over recent weeks, with Johnny Gargano also finding new purpose as he seeks an opportunity at the Undisputed WWE Championship. As a collective of SmackDown stars, it’s a strong offering in any combination, but there is more that could be done with the title.
Arguably, there’s an opportunity for WWE to break out of the “same old names” with Sami Zayn’s current reign, testing stars that may not have experienced the top title picture before, showing that they can hang with a veteran name and potentially setting them up for a future push.
As a concept, it’s a relatively easy one to push, with Zayn buoyed by his own success and starting off an “open challenge” series on SmackDown, while still building whatever rivalry will take us to the next WWE PLE.
