SmackDown Live Preview, May 22, 2018

These last few weeks have been all about the MITB matches and it’s been awesome. So often we complain that WWE seems to forget to add weight and importance to the events they try to sell us. However, that has not been the case with the upcoming pay-per-view, as each week the qualifying matches are given the focus they deserve with every superstar vying for an opportunity.

Every current Superstar when talking about Money in the Bank:

No Cass = Better Match

The build for MITB has been more glorious than Bobby Roode at a truck stop with George Michael. It’s been more epic than Peter Jackson remaking a New Hope. It’s been more fantastic than a picnic with Christopher Eccleston and Reed Richards. And this week’s SmackDown Live will be no different as Daniel Bryan and Jeff Hardy both get a second chance at qualifying for this year’s MITB ladder match. Well, a chance to qualify for a qualifying match anyway. It’s all very complicated and scientific. The United States Champion will face ‘D-Bry’ tonight with the winner going on the face Samoa Joe next week for an entry into the match.

As far as prizes go, getting to fight Samoa Joe is right up there with a gift card for a free circumcision and the director’s cut, Blu-Ray, special edition of One Night in Chyna. In other words: things that will scar you for life.

A match is a result of an injury to Big Cass during a recent live show. A bout between these two violently passionate men could be an instant classic given the proper time to evolve the match. With WWE‘s track record for giving us dream matches, expect a Dusty finish that attempts to save face for both men. Expect it to end with Joe interfering and forcing a triple threat match next week.

There’s a few odd things about this match:

  1. Why is Jeff going after the MITB contract instead of focusing on his US Championship? If he doesn’t care about it, then why should we? We saw how well it worked to have Seth say he cared more about the Intercontinental Title. Why is that not being done here?
  2. Why do they keep having tag teams like Breezango cut selfie videos about getting into the MITB match, yet they aren’t given one qualifying match while these guys get a second shot at it?
  3. Who is Byron Saxton?

A New Day for the New Day

With the New Day beating the Bar last week, they’ve earned a single spot in the men’s MITB match. However, the New Day is playing their cards close to the vest and haven’t revealed which member will enter the career-changing match.

Bear in mind, I’m not calling the contract career-changing; it’s facing off against Braun Strowman when he’s allowed weapons that will probably cause irreparable damage to someone’s quality of life.

Despite this very real danger, one of the New Day will take the opportunity, and the Miz has vowed to figure out which one it will be tonight on Miz TV. Though, WWE may stretch out the reveal for another week or two or use it as a plot device for breaking up the group as they all fight over the one spot.

In all likelihood, the nod will go to Big E since Kofi lost his singles push by upsetting that pillar of levelheaded behavior, Randy Orton. And the only way Xavier Woods is beating Brock or Braun in a match is by pressing “~ tgm.”

Will the ‘A-Lister’ stir the pot of dissension or will the New Day rally behind their chosen warrior? Who from the New Day do you want to see in the MITB match?

His & Hers MITB Briefcases

How could you not want to see that? It would be spectacular, not to mention, kinda adorable. Imagine Aiden English, standing tall on the ramp as the spotlight hits him. We all wait in anticipation as his beautiful baritone fills the arena and outcome Rusev and Lana celebrating Rusev Day with their new MITB briefcases. It almost brings a tear to your eye.

Don’t get misty yet, though, because before she gets a chance to climb the ladder, Lana must go through the IIconics’ Billie Kay in a MITB qualifying match tonight. As an aside, what a stupid way to spell “iconic.” It’s like the “Oneders” from That Thing You Do, just spell it “Wonders” and stop trying to be so damn clever you just confuse everyone.

Kay has been on a role with her partner Peyton Royce since making their main roster debut. So, don’t expect the ‘Ravishing Russian’ to fare well against the Kay. After all, the IIconics are better than Charlotte and Asuka.

A DeVille in the Rearview

Sonya Deville (which can we all agree sounds like a roller derby name) demanded another shot at qualifying for the women’s MITB match. She missed the opportunity last week in a triple threat match that saw Becky Lynch tap out DeVille’s former Absolution partner, Mandy Rose. However, since Sonya wasn’t the one to tap she wants Paige to give her another opportunity.

The resident GM Glampire was happy to acquiesce to DeVille’s demands by putting her in a match with former WWE Women’s Champion Naomi and telling her it was time to stand on her own two feet. Can DeVille make a name for herself and qualify for the MITB match or will the ‘Queen of Cardio’ snatch her bald?

Kyoto Crotch Kick Match and the Rest

Last week, Shinsuke Nakamura beat AJ Styles in order to determine the stipulation for their match at MITB. While this was a match we all begged and pleaded for, it may be a bit worn out at this point. However, here’s hoping that whatever stipulation Shinsuke decides on will finally end this feud and give us a clear winner.

The Bludgeon Brothers and Usos are still a thing, I think. Maybe.

Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas is right on the debut, jobber schedule. He’ll have another week or two of beating up local talent before moving into the mid-card and having all of his mystique ruined.

SAnitY is still a thing, I think. Maybe.
